Welcome To The Freelancers Association!

The Hamilton Freelancers Association (HFA) was founded in November 2013 by freelancing experts, Chad Fullerton (@chad_fullerton) and Brian Hogg (@brianhogg).

Our goal is to connect freelancers in the Hamilton area with each other, while providing valued workshops and attracting expert guest speakers to monthly events. By providing information on starting your own freelancing business, and connecting with others who are doing the same, we hope to spark collaborations and entrepreneurship within Hamilton’s young professionals and the community at large.

The Hamilton Freelancers Association currently has over 450+ registered members on our Meetup group, and continues to grow each month. We host monthly Freelancer Meetup networking events at 20 Augusta Street. Click here to learn more.

FREE NETWORKING FOR FREELANCERS AT ANY STAGE OF BUSINESS (even if you’re just starting out!)

You’re invited to a FREE B2B Networking event after work for local freelancers, consultants, and creative professionals in the Hamilton area. Simply bring business cards, your smile and a notepad to jot down notes during the expert guest presentation that kicks off the evening.

Be social! Spread the word about #FreelancerMeetup – bring a buddy (or three) to the event. Networking is better when there’s more people to talk to.

ABOUT FREELANCER MEETUP

Freelancer Meetups are monthly events run by the Hamilton Freelancers Association. They are free, and open to all creative professionals, consultants, and entrepreneurs in the Hamilton area that are freelancing and running their own business (or looking to learn how to start!). If you’re looking to start a freelancing consulting business be sure to visit our resources page beforehand for tips on starting your own business.

We bring in some of the best and brightest to give talks on ways to help you build and grow your entrepreneurial venture, along with facilitated icebreakers and open networking.

We’re here to help support each other, and celebrate in our successes as we grow our own businesses. Freelancer Meetup is more than just a networking event, it is a place to learn and not feel judged or afraid to ask questions. No question is considered a “stupid question” here! In fact, we welcome all questions and feedback – and find expert guests to come and do presentations on topics our members are commonly struggling with in their business.

Our group is made up of beginners and experienced freelancers alike, we act as mentors and are here to work with you to answer any questions you have about freelancing and starting your own business. There are no stupid questions here, all egos are left at the door. We only welcome people willing to learn, be open to meeting new people, and wanting to grow their business and connections with like-minded local freelancers.

If you’re interested in starting, building, or growing your own business monetizing your skills and taking on projects part-time ‘on the side’, or full-time as a consulting business, then #FreelancerMeetup is for you. We welcome freelancers with all types of skills and specialties, including graphic/web designers, developers, marketers, writers, videographers, photographers, PR specialists, coaches, trainers, consultants, and everyone in between. If you’re taking on projects from multiple clients and building a business yourself, then we want to meet you!

WHAT TO EXPECT

At each meetup we kick things off with a 10 minute ‘tips and tools’ session where Chad Fullerton (or other HFA members) showcase various web-based tools and services you can use as a freelancer to help you build or grow your business such as productivity apps, email marketing services, invoicing, design, social media, and accounting tools.

Next we have a 30-minute expert guest speaker present on a topic to do with building or growing your business. We’ve had a variety of guests in the past including social media experts, branding experts, lawyers with legal advice, accountants, sales coaches, and team members from FreshbooksWave Apps, just to name a few. 10 minutes for Q&A afterwards.

After the guest speaker presentation, we do a few icebreakers to help facilitate new connections and get you meeting new people. Ask questions, get advice, and share stories and experiences. We make it as easy to meet new people as possible, in a friendly, comfortable, open environment.

NO FEE

#FreelancerMeetup is a free networking event. There are no strings attached. No hardsells. No membership fees. We rely on our incredible venue partner The Pheasant Plucker which provides us the space at no charge (please purchase a drink or food to show your support!). Our guest speakers graciously volunteer their time to help educate our attendees, and local businesses donate door prizes. The only thing we ask from attendees is a business card or e-mail address to join our mailing list so we can keep in touch about future events, webinars, resources, and mentions/offers from our sponsors and event supporters.

NO PRESSURE

The other thing is no pressure. #FreelancerMeetup was created specifically to assist shy, introvert freelancers meet new people and grow their business. If you’re not the type of person that can walk up to a stranger and introduce yourself, don’t worry! We’re here to help you learn how to be confident in meeting new people, and letting the world know about the skills you have. Meeting and pitching your business to new clients is the core part of building a freelancing business, and a meetup event like #FreelancerMeetup is a great opportunity to build your personal confidence and ability to ‘pitch yourself’.

Attendees are never asked to stand up and address the room, present in front of everyone, or give their ‘elevator pitch’. You can participate as much or as little as you want.

Finally, you can attend as many or as little meetup events as you wish. If your business starts to get busy and you actually are so busy you can’t attend all of the networking events, no problem! We’re going to miss seeing you, but are happy to hear you’re rocking it with client projects! After each meetup, a recap e-mail is sent out so you can see everything you missed, and get caught up for the next meetup.

NO RESTRICTIONS

The Hamilton Freelancers Association is a truly open networking group. There are no restrictions to HFA Freelancer Meetup events. No one is excluded. Unlike in some business networking groups where they only allow one person of each industry to join (eg. you can only be the only lawyer, the only realtor, the only marketer, etc) we take a different approach. We believe connecting with other freelancers with the same skills as you but potentially more experience can be beneficial in sharing tips, advice, and mentor ship. Freelancing encompasses a wide variety of skill sets and spans many different industries. Connecting with as many people that have complimentary skills, and can work with you on projects together or help you grow your business is the key to networking, so we don’t restrict this in any way. The more people you can meet, the better.

PLEASE NOTE: We’re trying new summer hours for this meetup. Everything will be starting half an hour earlier, doors open at 6pm, event starts at 6:30pm, networking starts at 7:20pm. Feel free to stop by after work between 5-6:30pm to enjoy a drink or dinner on the patio before the Meetup event begins

We’re excited to announce that Peter Skoretz, financial advisor at Edward Jones will be guest speaker at the May 2015 Freelancer Meetup! He will be sharing tips for your business finances.

There will also be a short presentation from Chad Fullerton on tools you can use for Content Marketing and automating your website WordPress posts to social media.

PRESENTATION FOR APRIL 2015

We’re really excited to have Claudia Adair speaking at our April meetup!

Claudia is a sales trainer, consultant & performance coach with over 20+ years experience. She is President of Transform & Perform (TAP) and has developed sales professionals and leaders in fast-paced, results-oriented environments across a myriad of small-to medium-sized businesses. She is also a Certified Professional Coach experienced in helping people step towards their desired results. Claudia now focuses on helping solopreneurs get comfortable “selling” — particularly those who “didn’t exactly sign up for sales!” through her effective selling programs.

The topic Claudia will be presenting on is one that all freelancers can benefit from, whether you’re just starting out or an experienced consultant… tips to how to perfect your sales pitch to new clients, getting them to say YES and hire you for the project!

TOPIC: Orchestrating a Sales Consultation That Wins You Business

We will be exploring how to:

  1. Stay “in control” of the sales conversation without appearing pushy.
  2. Get your Client’s interest and keep them interested.
  3. Find out what problem needs solving.
  4. Communicate that you’re the uniquely qualified person that will solve their problem.
  5. Comfortably move your Client to the next step.
  6. Minimize those dreaded objections!

NETWORKING

Following the expert speaker presentation, we jump right into networking! Connect with other local freelancers, swap business cards, ask questions, get advice, and share stories and experiences. Depending on the number of attendees, we usually start off by breaking the group up into smaller groups so you can get to know a smaller number of people in-depth and discuss in a smaller group setting. Then after about 30 minutes, we open up the networking to ‘open floor’ which means everyone can mingle around the room and chat with anyone they want. This way you get to meet a group of 5-10 people really well, and also have the ability to connect with everyone else in the room by the end of the evening.
